Review: Snap - Love Ghost

“Snap” is the latest single of Love Ghost, a rap act I had never heard of before–but I’m glad I have now!

The track is pretty much a banger, featuring catchy beats, different changes in rhythm, style and melody, and exquisitely aggressive lyrics.

The rapper’s voice is low and, to a degree, threatening, reminding me of the guttural screams of a death metal singer. It is clear that Love Ghost comes from the generation of emo rappers who intersect pop punk and rap, similar to Machine Gun Kelly and Ashnikko, to name two.

From the very beginning, he goes straight to the point: “If I’m being honest, I don’t really like you / And if I'm being honest, I do wanna fight you.”

The chorus is more melodic than the verses, as are the vocals in the second verse, making me wonder whether that is still Love Ghost’s voice or if another artist has chimed in.

I was beyond surprised to hear a female voice rapping in Spanish right after the second chorus. This is definitely my favourite part of the song: I love how the vocals are overlaid on each other giving the track multiple dimensions on which to exist.

After this little section in Spanish, we hear Love Ghost’s voice once again, this time singing in his regular voice, for a brief bridge that takes us to the final chorus, the melody slowing down more and more in an attempt at a little climax.

I’m definitely curious to see what else Love Ghost will release in the near future! “Snap” comes out today, September 1st.
