Interview: The F-Use - For The Love Of God

With a sound that has been described as a mix of The White Stripes, Nirvana, and Gorillaz, Nashville-based outfit The F-Use sure are bringing a lot of noise on their latest single ‘For The Love Of God’.

Written and recorded entirely by frontman Matthew Estevez from his home studio during lockdown, ‘For The Love Of God’ sees him unleash his pent-up frustration at the state of the world on this fast-paced and blistering punk-inspired stomper.

So with the new single available now, we sat down with them to ask more about this stunning new release and what the future holds for them.

Chris) Hi guys, how are you today?

The F-Use) Hey! I’m doing great, currently on my 4th cup of coffee so I’m just starting to wake up.

For those who haven’t heard you yet, how would you describe your sound?

Oh goodness, I usually try to say rock and not go too deep into specific sub-genres. My biggest influences are Foo Fighters, Beatles, System of a Down, Rage Against the Machine… bands along those sounds shine through in my personal sound.

You have just released your new single ‘For The Love Of God’. Can you tell us how that came about?

I wrote the main riff earlier this year and it was just so raw to me and I knew I had to flesh it out. It was right around when the virus first hit when I had finished the song structurally, so I was pretty isolated and really learning a lot about myself. I reflected a lot with the past few years of my life because I felt as if I were on auto-pilot, emotionally that is, and never really digested my experiences. I felt like this song was a perfect tip of the iceberg for me (in a healthy way, I promise). I just felt trapped, aggravated, and desperate to let it all out. The recording came along in tandem with recording the rest of the album, so each song kind of inspired each other.

And were you inspired by anything in particular when you wrote it?

Musically, it was the Foo Fighters “Wasting Light” album. The brightness, rawness, and meaning of that album is what inspired the tone. Lyrically, just desperation and frustration honestly.

Do you have any plans to release an EP or even album in the near future?

Yes! I’m releasing a second single September 18th called ‘I’m Still Me’. After that, a full album will be coming out October 23rd!

Coronavirus has obviously stopped the live shows for the moment, but what about your plans for the rest of the year?

As of now, just focused on promoting the upcoming releases, but I’ve already started on writing another album! I’m trying to look at this whole situation with a silver lining to get back in touch with myself and really figure out what my priorities are in life instead of staying in auto-pilot.

And finally, what has been the most unusual thing to happen to you as a band?

Well, it’s interesting because the band is just me. There had been some instances where I’d get friends in the band to play shows, but it was never really consistent. Nothing out of the ordinary has happened, but the promotional pictures have been myself photoshopped 4 times over so it looks like it’s a 4 piece band and someone was convinced I was a quadruplet.
