Interview: The Chase - Wondering

While the coronavirus lockdown proved to be a turbulent and unsure time for many around the country, Nottingham-based outfit The Chase wasn’t going to let it get them down as they worked on their latest upbeat single ‘Wondering’.

With its bright and uplifting nods to the Britpop sound, ‘Wondering’ makes for a wonderfully fresh and vibrant return for the four-piece. Filled with soaring synths, blistering rhythms, and many a hint of acts such as The Charlatans throughout, expect this to be the first of many irresistible anthems from the group to come.

So with the video to their latest gem dropping recently, we sat down with them to find out more about their new offering and what they have in store for us in the near future.

Chris) Hi guys, how are you today?

The Chase) Better than most, maybe not as well as others…

For those that haven’t heard of you yet, how would you best describe your sound and who have been your influences?

Our sound is an amalgamation of 1960’s rock and roll, northern soul and psychedelia, post-punk, indie and 1990’s Britpop mashed in together. Growing up in the 2000’s has been a bleak time for music and it’s not got any better so for us to find what we like we’ve had to go backwards. The Smiths, Jimi Hendrix, The Sex Pistols, Oasis, Rodriquez and The Beatles all inspire us massively as a band even to this day. Anything loud and with a good chorus we love.

You have just released your new single ‘Wondering’, can you tell us how the track came about?

Wondering is about escapism and being trapped by our surroundings in the everyday loop of working life. We wanted to write about this without hitting the same rock n roll clichés which everyone’s heard before and also not in a negative way. There’s a lot of hope in the song and it’s the hope that drives you to want to get out.

Was there a particular style you were looking for when you wrote it?

When we write we never do the same thing twice and we wanted to go down more of an electronic route after listening to a lot of Reverend and The Makers and Bad Sounds. We wanted to make something different to what we’ve done before and have some groove!

Can we expect a new EP, or even an album from you in the near future?

Expect the unexpected and expect what can be expected; big fucking tunes! I’m afraid that’s all we can say now…

The coronavirus outbreak has obviously affected everyone’s plans, but what have you got in store for the rest of the year?

In an ideal world we would be on tour, but it doesn’t look like we can for a good while yet so in the meantime we’re making tin-foil hats in our band bunker and hiding from Bill Gates until we go back to the studio in October.

And finally, what has been your fondest memory as an artist working today?

Playing Rock City in Nottingham was huge for us as it’s something we’ve always aimed for since we were kids! Being invited down to be in Liam Gallagher’s music video was another huge one for us and it’s something we’ll never forget.
