Interview: Brian Jarvis - Something New

New England singer/songwriter Brian Jarvis entices listeners with captivating honesty and a voice drawing comparisons to David Gray and Ruston Kelly. For the past 10 years, Jarvis has been on the road touring the country supporting several well-known acts within the Singer-Songwriter genre. It is safe to say that 2020 derailed most songwriters in the music industry. Shortly before the pandemic began Jarvis wrapped up a new single titled ‘Surrender’ which tackles the heavy topic of his own personal struggles with depression.

Hi Brian Jarvis. Nice to be able to interview you. How is life in Hartford for you? Would you recommend the city for people from outside United States?

Hartford, CT USA is not a known destination to visit. However, it is home to some of the best musicians and creatives in my humble opinion.

Are there any musicians who inspire you? What qualities do you admire about them?

I am big into great songwriters. John Mayer is the troubadour of my lifetime. His gift for melody is just top notch. I also love David Gray, Ben Rector, and Country music. They all just bring such good melodies to the party. I love anything that has a great hook!

Your latest track is 'Something New'. Can you share with us the background of its creation and did any unusual things happen during its creation?

It was co-written with my fellow songwriter Brendan James. It really was made from coming out of the pandemic. I took a trip down to Charleston, SC just as the pandemic started to break. We worked for 2 days on it and it was the most lovely experience. We really captured the great energy of the trip and the idea of exploring something new both sonically and lyrically.

How can you describe the music you make?

I make music that is honest, relatable, and hooky.

Do you have common hobbies beyond music?

I love football (American football) it’s my biggest hobby away from music.

What got you started in the music industry?

My father. He was my biggest inspiration to pursue it. When he passed away suddenly I took a leap into it fulltime.

What is the biggest decision you’ve had to make?

To bet on myself know matter what other people say about the odds. I had many doubters in my early career. I have been fulfilled and vindicated over time.

What are your achievements to the moment?

I have been on many national tours supporting many great artists from Andy Grammar to Howie Day. My debut record in 2012 reached the top 50 on the iTunes top 100.

How do you feel the Internet has impacted the music business?

It’s a new game. Its more focused on the music being a string attached to marketing and reels/tiktok. It has devalued the album and focuses more on minutes than moments. It is constantly changing and evolving.

What are your plans for the future?

I have 5 songs to release this year. Then it will be focused on touring and supporting the music!
