“Situationship,” a pop-rock banger that will knock your socks off, was Kaleigh’s only single in 2022 and, if her plan was to get us wanting for more, it definitely worked!
Reminding me of mid-2000s emo punk bands like Paramore and Fall Out Boy, Kaleigh’s voice perfectly holds up to the energy of the instrumentals. The track starts with a brief guitar riff before the singer kicks in. Her voice adapts to the ups and downs of the arrangement: softer on the verses to then throw everything out in the chorus, which doesn’t come until almost 2 minutes into the song. In fact, the song doesn’t really have a chorus but rather a pre-chorus
The title is self-explanatory: we all know what a “situationship,” which has entered our vocabulary in the past few years thanks to the rise of dating apps, is and how frustrating it might be. In the track, Kaleigh explores precisely this: the complex dynamics between two people that like each other but “no, not like that.”
Building up to the punch-line, pronounced halfway between singing and a genuinely annoyed tone: “Fuck / Situationships suck!” Kaleigh finds the perfect balance between her sweet voice and a more aggressive tone throughout the song, using different vocal techniques to achieve exactly what she wants.
When the arrangement winds down a little more, she sings in a more hushed voice, “I’m addicted to this side,” as we venture into some vocal improvisations that give some variety to the track. The chorus is repeated once more time before the artist states her truth one more time in her most expressive tone:
“Situationships suck!”
