LITM Rock Picks This Week: Poppy Roscoe and more!

LITM Rock Picks are a delicious cocktail of talents this week, ranging from Poppy Roscoe, John Michael Hersey and more!

Poppy Roscoe - “Plastic Sun”

Resurrected in 2023 amidst the arid Sonoran Wastelands, Poppy Roscoe, led by Izzy Fortune and Jacob Smith, is an LA-based Art-Rock group — and forming part of their latest album “Manzanita”, is “Plastic Sun”, a track that brings back everything good about classic surf rock — from the driving groove that dots this song to the rich, layered vocals, the energy on this track stays a steady sober soundtracked by the creamy, thick guitars and the skilful drumming — and the grand bridge section is the cherry on top of the cake! Surely worth a listen! Take a listen to the track here:

Lauri Järvilehto - “Typhoon”

Lauri Järvilehto, a versatile musician, author and philosopher has released seven solo albums (some under the pseudonyms Songsworth and Lau) and contributed as a musician, producer, and composer to over 70 projects — and his latest single, “Typhoon”, is a chilled out, energetic and enthusiastic presentation of feel-good pop rock that has you grooving and moving from right the first second; while the bass keeps the energy firmly grounded in the middle, the ear candy comes from the vocal layers, the organic sound design choices like the natural sounding claps and the preppy, energetic drumming. There’s a ton to appreciate about the track — take a listen to it here!

Kevin McClure - “Strawberry Blonde”

Emerging from Omaha, Nebraska, singer-songwriter Kevin McClure fuses alt-rock, acoustic ballads, and pop rhythms to create endearing stories with memorable rhythms and grooves — and on his latest single, “Strawberry Blonde”, he brings together the best of his talents to create an emotionally resonant, happy go lucky piece that stays in your head long after the track has ended; with his instrumentation and his voice coming together rather nicely to create a soothing, uplifting listen with warm, loving themes that make no mistake in making you feel all warm and super fuzzy inside; take a listen to the track here!

John Michael Hersey - “Everybody Wants It Now”

Singer/Songwriter/Actor John Michael Hersey, known for his classy blend of rock, pop, folk, blues, and country music, is a veteran in the music industry, with eighteen albums to his name — and on his latest single, “Everybody Wants It Now”, he weaves an enjoyable tale with his voice, guitars and a twist of country rock in the leads, with the happy Rhodes chords humming away in the background; while his song structure amazes with its melodic variations, switchups when you least expect them, and harmonies. There’s also much to appreciate about the relaxed, laid-back candour of this song; take a listen to it here!

Vazum - “Western Violence”

Formed in Detroit in 2017, VAZUM is an alternative rock band known for their dark, introspective sound, taking on almost an underground goth rock sound that, if I may say so myself, clicks — and on their latest single, “Western Violence”, they bring influences from the schools of post-punk, and post rock to weave a grim, dark melodic picture from bar one; and with the growled vocals in the background fronted by a powerful female lead, the aura of this song is mystical, it’s alluring, and it’s the kind that will draw you in most definitely.
