LITM Rock Picks This Week: Violet Whimsey and more!

In this edition of LITM Rock Picks, we curate a mix of artists like Violet Whimsey and more!

Violet Whimsey - “Loving You (Was Killing Me)”

Violet Whimsey is an indie rock and pop artist that prides herself on bringing a sunny tinge to rock music with her instrumentals and her singing — and on her latest single, “Loving You (Was Killing Me)”, she paints a vivid picture of heartbreak, poignant singing overflowing from every nook of this track. The electric guitars and the uptempo drumming keep things moving along in quite the poise, while the good ole solo in the middle of the track is expertly played with the dual guitar work. The mix brings things together quite well, with a wide and powerful sound that cements this track’s place as a certified rock banger. Take a listen to the track here!

Dead Tooth - “Birthday Boohoo”

Queens-based quintet Dead Tooth delivers "rodeo-core" chaos with high-energy hooks, gritty sax, and brazen lyrics — and on their latest single, “Birthday Boohoo”, he brings a sound that’s electric, unapologetic, and experimental from the very start; the backbeat on the drumming and the brasses keep you at the edge of your seat from start to end; and blending it with the shenanigans that the ensemble gets up to at seemingly the most random places, lends this track an experimental, avant-garde edge, the likes of which I do not know of compare, but I do know it is electric to listen to. All in all, a track unlike any other, and I mean that in the best ways possible — check out the track here!

King In Yellow - “Dark Passengers”

King In Yellow, founded by longtime friends Kyle McDonough and Nick Vining, merges timeless melodies with razor-sharp rhythms — and taking an inroad into psychedelic, experimental rock, they hit the nail on the head with their latest single, “Dark Passengers”, a journey into dark, experiential rock — the downtempo drumming and the downtrend guitars give this track an air of mystery and darkness from the first bar, while the energy picks up deliciously up toward the chorus — while the doom metal-esque clean singing pairs super well with the flanged guitars and the dark lyrical themes of this track. All in all, a gritty track you’ll love! Take a listen to it here:

The Pulltops - “Red Eye Open Sky”

Milwaukee-based duo The Pulltops deliver a dynamic mix of Alternative Rock, Power Pop, and Album Rock. Combining eclectic influences with a shared love for strong hooks, they create music that’s both classic and fresh on their latest single, “Red Eye Open Sky” — what I’d describe as the perfect sunset highway track, this track gets the fundamentals of a feel-good rock track amazingly right — be it the wide open sound in the choruses, the poignant, romantic lyrics, or the tasteful drumming and guitar work, there’s much to appreciate about how this track comes together — and by the time this track bids you adieu, you’re hunting the repeat button for one more lap; check out the track here!

Backstrom - “Dark Clouds”

Backstrom, a versatile artist crafting Folk, Country, and Rock, returned to music in 2023 with a creative surge, releasing The Carousel in January 2024 — and since then, he’s been hard at work, and it all comes together on his latest single, “Dark Clouds” — a sultry, powerfully sung rock ballad that’s supported by the pianos and the gentle (yet powerful) acoustic guitars that would remind you of post-rock in its execution. The pulse of the track sways gently, taking your neck with it, while the mix is wide and powerful. The velvety vocal layers bring this track to the level it hits, and there’s only good things to say about this track. Check it out here!
