Following on from the huge success they received for their previous singles, which have landed them spots on BBC 6Music, XS Manchester, and BBC Introducing, Sunderland-based outfit Plastic Glass are now back to blow us away once again on their latest gem ‘Going Away’.
Bringing the same bold and energetic sound of acts like Circa Waves and The Amazons, ‘Going Away’ sees the four-piece deliver one of their most impactful offerings yet. Filled with rip-roaring riffs, thunderous production, and a brilliantly catchy chorus, expect this one to see them conquer the airwaves once again.
So with the new single available now, we had a quick chat with them to find out more about their latest material and what is on the horizon for them.

Chris) Hi guys, how are you today?
Plastic Glass) Hey Chris, and everyone reading this, we’re doing great.
For those that haven’t heard of you yet, how would you best describe your sound and who have been your biggest influences so far?
Straight up we’re just an indie rock band, but I like to think there’s a lot more to us than that. People often pull-out different things from our tracks but there’s always something interesting, either a punky tinge, more of a rhythmic vibe, but regardless people usually say we write a nice, anthemic, chorus. In terms of influences, we’d be daft not to say the bog-standard Oasis etc as that obviously was a big influence, but I think it goes deeper. We’ve all got our individual influences, I know Dylan (Guitar) takes a lot from the likes of John Squire and Jimi Hendrix and personally I look a lot at The Enemy when song writing, just feel their tunes are so big and catchy.
You are also from Sunderland. Could you tell us what the scene has been like up there in recent years?
We are from Sunderland and WE LOVE IT. The scene was quite big in the 00s with bands like The Futureheads and Field Music making a name for the region, I’d certainly say there was a down period following that but in the last 12 months the region has certainly been getting back to its best. I could be here all day shouting about Sunderland artists that we love so I won’t start but honestly, if you’re ever wanting to find out what the scene is like up here or even just find some new music to listen to don’t hesitate to message us for some recommendations.
You have just released your new single ‘Going Away’. Can you tell us how that track came about? Is there a story behind it?
Yeah, bit of a funny one actually. I (Ben, bass player) wrote the original version of this track a while back, disclaimer, it was shite. We played it maybe once or twice, but then worked on it some more, Dylan took the original ideas of people moving away for University etc and re-wrote the lyrics into something much better. We then worked on it as a band and brought it together into the riff heavy version you hear as the single today which in all honesty, hasn’t changed much for the year or so it’s been in the live set since that initial reincarnation.
And how would you say it compares to some of your older material?
Erm it’s certainly better! Just a lot more professional, we’ve found our sound. We worked on it with Jack and Jordan at Motorhouse Studios which, now we’ve found people we love working with, certainly helps the tracks come to life in a way we personally enjoy a lot more. I just think it’s better all round, better musically, better lyrically, better production, better delivery. Yeah, just the same Plastic Glass just a whole lot better.
Can we expect a new EP, or even an album from you in the near future?
In short, yes. Probably not an album for now, but there’s certainly plans to put a larger body of work out next year hopefully. There’s definitely a lot more to come, we’re thinking along the lines of a couple of singles followed by a 4-track EP but the way the world is going, who knows.
The coronavirus outbreak has obviously affected everyone’s plans, but what have you got in store for the next few months?
Erm not a whole lot to be honest, the single and music video has recently come out as you mentioned so that’s kind of the bulk of our content for the rest of this year. Depending on when this goes out there’s probably still some behind the scenes videos and an acoustic session to go with single but apart from that I’m not sure. We’ve got some more socially distanced shows pencilled in for the new year, but it’s hard to say right now if they’ll be happening.
And finally, what other act would you dream of playing alongside one day?
I’ll try and stay away from the cliché Oasis or The Beatles, although we certainly wouldn’t say no, but I’ll go for someone who I know we all love going to see live, particularly at festivals because they always throw a massive party and that’s Reverend And The Makers. Their gigs are mental so to play with them would be class!
