Interview: Late Met Dawn - Bunny

Late Met Dawn is Fin on classical guitar and vocals, and Podge on electric guitar. They met at a long-since-canceled open mic when they were working on their own solo projects. A random thought, a call, and then later, after the organized jam in 2021, they thought it sounded good, so they kept going. "Bunny" was recorded live in Beardfire Studio, Harold's Cross, Dublin, on the 5th of February, 2023, under a full moon.

Kamil) Hey Late Met Dawn, super nice to have the chance to chat with you. What first got you into music?

You too, Kamil. Em... It was chance encounter in many ways. A good few years back, I was working in a pillow shop and a madman started there. We chatted about music, I had been writing a lot of poetry over the previous years and was helping him with some lyrics. This lead to a jam, I sang. We named ourselves. We wrote songs. He fucked off. I had to pick up the guitar, which due to a wrist defect meant playing a right handed guitar like a leftie. It was the start and it's been fun and games ever since. From the first jam of this particular project, we both thought it was odd and engaging, so an originally planned single, turned into an EP that then turned into an album.

Who would you most like to collaborate with?

For me, as Podge isn't around, it would be people like Beck, Fiona Apple, Radiohead, Liam Howlett, Kila, DJ Shadow, Dolly Parton. A wish list of ridiculous dreams, but the weird wonders that might emerge would be wild.

Your latest song is 'Bunny'. Can you tell us more about the making of it and if there were any unusual things happening during the process?

We'd decided early on that we were going to record it LIVE. Podge is a bit of a lunatic and wanted to record it on the full moon, so we planned it for Feb 5th earlier this year. After we recorded it, any plan to add anything in post was abandoned. It was decided as the first single from the album for reasons protected by a blood oath.

What are you focussing on right now?

Current focus is promoting the single and hunting gigs. We've had our heads down with jamming, planning and recording the album, so since we are now in the "i" dotting part of the process, we've the time to unwind and look at home and abroad for opportunities to play.

What are you most proud of?

Funnily enough Kamil, the thing I am most proud of is making an album. Making music has been a pretty long and often lonely road, with no real reason to ever continue or level of attention to sustain, but the solace in playing kept me playing and kept me writing and kept me sane.

What is the biggest challenge of being an artist?

Objectivity.

How do you structure your day?

Not really one for structure. Earn a crust and wing it.

Do you have any hobbies or interests outside of music?

Yes.

Do you sing in the shower? What songs?

No. N/A.

What are your plans for the future?

Gigs, jams, planning the second album. Exciting times. Bunny is out now, so we have something to pedal. :) Play more to play more to play to more.
