Interview: Little Victories - Set In Stone

Having racked up millions of streams for their work as session musicians for other artists over the years, London-based trio Little Victories are now ready to introduce themselves to the world with their powerful debut single ‘Set In Stone’.

Channeling a warm and dynamic pop-rock direction from start to finish, ‘Set In Stone’ makes for a wonderfully introduction to their sound. With its sweet and sweeping direction matched with beautifully rich vocals throughout, it certainly feels like we will be hearing a lot more from this lot in the months to come.

So with the new single available now, we sat down with them to find out more about their newest release and what they have planned on the horizon.

Chris) Hi, how are you today?

Little Victories) Do you want the truth or the airs and graces of British politeness? Haha seriously we're doing great thanks, considering where we are right now as it's only been less than a month since we launched.

For those that haven’t heard of you yet, how would you best describe your sound and who have been your biggest influences so far?

For us it’s been a bit of a rollercoaster defining our Little Victories sound!

Someone once described us as sophisticated pop which is great but also it sounds like we're peering down our nose at the pop world which isn't fair because there’s so many brilliant artists and tracks in that genre. Alternatively, we’ve been described as a neo Fleetwood Mac, which we joke about but can definitely get behind! Maybe if Fleetwood Mac and The 1975 had a secret love child… that could be us?

Short story is that we’ve landed on the alt-indie-pop post. Make sense of that!

Can you tell us what kind of music you listened to while you were growing up as well?

We all have very broad pallets and have different influences springing from all over the place.

Nay: I’m a Disney gal so I grew up learning pretty much every lyric to every song, along with whatever my parents were listening to on cassettes and the radio. I didn’t have too much access to music but Fleetwood Mac, The Carpenters and random bands like Sum 41 and Linkin Park filtered through in my teens. I also taught myself piano so when I discovered Ludovico Einaudi and Olafur Arnalds I fell in love with a whole new music scene.

Sam: I grew up learning bluegrass tunes from my guitar teacher so my musical roots started there. My first record was a Busted record, but thankfully Jimi Hendrix changed my life and put me on the right track when I listened to him for the first time! Blink 182 and Green Day were also a pretty big part of my early listening but then I discovered “guitar hero’s” like Frank Zappa, Steve Vai and Joe Satriani and went way down the rabbit hole with those guys. Mix that in with folk from the British Isles and Ireland and that’s pretty much it - I only stuck my head into the “pop” world at around the age of eighteen (late bloomer I know!), I had no idea what I was missing!

Marcus: My first album was Gorillaz self titled, and I listened to a bunch of Counting Crows which got me into writing lyrics and showing you can actually be an emotional guy. I taught myself how to play guitar along to Green Day songs and slapped da bass along to Red Hot Chili Peppers, and fell in love with the 2000’s ‘emo’ boom though I was never brave enough to commit to the fashion! However, it was City and Colour that was the real catalyst that got me singing and writing songs. Oh and my mum would have Bon Jovi on 24/7. She has a signed photo of him next to my graduation picture and he’s even the star atop her Christmas tree!

You have just released your debut single ‘Set In Stone’. Can you tell us how that release came about? Is there a story behind it?

The song itself was written a long time ago when Sam and Nay used to live together as students. Nay couldn’t play the guitar part so she brought the song to Sam. Fast forward 8 years, we were able to bring a new angle and textures with Marcus when we recorded it in the studio back in early 2020. We were in fact due to release in 2020, but as with the nature of this industry with sharks and snakes aplenty, a “manager” convinced us to postpone releasing until we finally cut ties. We’re just glad everything is now back in our control.

Are you also planning an EP or even an album in the near future?

Abso-blumin-lutely! We have so much in store for you guys and we can’t wait to share it all. We can’t say too much at the moment but do keep your eyes peeled for our EP release in the coming year. There’s plenty more in the pipeline for sure!

And with venues back open again, do you have any plans to perform live in the coming months?

We do indeed- We’ll be performing at the Sebright Arms, London on Saturday 5th March 2022 so stay tuned for tickets- we MIGHT be releasing an EP around that time…but stay tuned on that!

Finally, what is the biggest dream you hope to achieve as a band?

To get paid??? Jokes aside, we all live and breathe music, and it’s kept us going through thick and thin so to be able to make a sustainable living doing what we love while connecting with all kinds of people from all across the world would be the ultimate dream. Plus Sam wants a yacht.
