Interview: Rya Park - Everything We Want

Naarm-based (Melbourne) artist Rya Park returns with the anthemic indie-rock single - ‘Everything We Want’, the second single from her debut EP ‘Generational’. With this single, Rya Park shows us a different side to her. While her previous singles have touched on topics like anxiety, depression and heartbreak, ‘Everything We Want’ is an ode to the all-consuming romance she feels with her partner, Nick Tam - punk band ‘Kill Bell’s’ guitarist and Melbourne music scene photographer. The duo tend to spend most of their time seeing and playing gigs around Melbourne, with Rya supporting the likes of Tyne-James Ograne, CLEWS, Alex Lahey and SOPPHO.

Kamil) Hey Rya Park, super nice to have the chance to chat with you. What first got you into music?

I first started playing music with my dad. He’s a guitarist and singer and we would just always jam together from when I was about 3 years old.

Are there any musicians who inspire you? What qualities do you admire about them?

Billie eilish and Adele. They’re both super humble and honest. I can imagine having dinner with them and it being very fun and chill.

Your latest track is 'Everything We Want’. Can you share with us the background of its creation and did any unusual things happen during its creation?

I wrote this with my bestie Sam Phay about my partner of 5 years. I knew I wanted to write something that was an ode to him and all the love he’s shown me over the time we’ve been together. We’ve faced a lot of challenges together but we’ve managed to get through them step by step. I suppose it was unsusual for me to write a love song in the first place!

Which skills have you gained that help you perform effectively as a musician?

I try to practice self-compassion as I am generally very critical of myself as a person and a performer too. It’s been a long process but I knew being pessimistic about how I was performing was really holding me back from things I wanted to explore on stage. Now that I’m being a little kinder to myself I seem to be having more fun as a performer and more in the moment with the audience.

What are your favourite musical genres, and are there any you dislike?

Definitely 90s indie pop - Gwen Stefani, Alanis Morrissette. I don’t dislike any genres but I definitely prefer catchy pop songs!

Describe your creative process when you write new music.

I usually pull out my google docs app on my phone in a songwriting session and it’s a stream of consciousness sort of thing. I tend to just really write about what’s going on in that exact moment in my life.

What is the biggest decision you’ve had to make?

I weirdly don’t make decisions. I guess I just have a gut instinct about things and I just do it. That can be good and bad haha.

What is it about music that makes you feel passionate?

I guess just being able to share my own stories and seeing that people relate to them
