Hello Garland Kelley. What strengths do you have that you believe make you a great musician?
I believe my strengths as a musician lie in my years of experience and ongoing dedication to my craft and instrument. I also feel that I write authentic and unique music that connects with listeners.
What is your dream project?
My dream project is to write and produce an immersive play in which I am also a cast member. Theatre was one of my earliest creative influences and I have always dreamed of creating work in a medium I so greatly admire.
Your latest track is 'A Mind of Your Own'. Can you share with us the background of its creation and did any unusual things happen during its creation?
‘A Mind of Your Own’ is a song about disinformation, freethought, and media manipulation. It was written in response to the current social and political environment in America and worldwide. The idea behind the song is to deprogram and deconstruct trained social beliefs and behaviors to find one’s true identity and perspective.
What makes you angry?
Widespread disconnection from nature and the abuse of our planet.
What is the most surprising fact you’ve learnt about yourself?
The most surprising fact I have learned about myself is that I am passionate about studying history. I have always had an interest in this subject but over time have developed a passion for studying the course of human history to understand as many details as possible while also understanding the overarching patterns and trajectory.
What do you dislike about your work?
I think this is a common situation with singers but I have never been fully comfortable listening to myself sing. Over time, I have come to appreciate my voice and learned how to use it to serve my art and music.
What is one message you would give to your fans?
All of existence is interconnected.
Is the artistic life lonely? What do you do to counteract it?
I think loneliness is inherent to human existence. I feel that the best art often comes from this more melancholic space. Self-awareness is beautiful but comes with its darkness and sharp edges. I succumb to my petty weaknesses on a daily basis but am always seeking to achieve a state of acceptance, existing fully in the moment. A stoic disposition and philosophy help me cope with the often-overwhelming grief of human existence and mortality. Don’t get me wrong, I love feeling joy, love, and all of the other positive emotions of life but I feel that expecting to achieve a permanent state of elation is a dangerous concept.
What do you think is the most beautiful thing you’ve ever seen or experienced?
The most beautiful things I’ve seen or experienced are generally in nature. Currently, the Grand Canyon tops the list but I have many plans to backpack with my family throughout the world to see the beauty this planet has to offer.
What are your plans for the future?
I have many plans for the future, hopefully I will be granted enough time to accomplish some or most of them!
