Kamil) Hey Mia Delamar, super nice to have the chance to chat with you. What first got you into music?
I’ve been singing since I could talk. I don't remember my life without music. It just always came naturally to me. I began singing publicly in my church’s choir as a small child. It was always so much fun to give God glory during praise and worship and that is still true for me today. My family is huge on music, many of them can sing and play instruments, but I happen to be one of the ones who’s making a career out of it. I distinctly remember watching some of my biggest inspirations win and perform at the BET Awards and Grammys every year and I would tell my parents “That’s going to be me next year”. I’ve said this every year since I was a toddler. I believe one day “next year” it will be me. I think the one thing that’s catapulted me is being able to see myself there.
Who would you most like to collaborate with?
This is a tough question because I can’t just choose one. However, I would love to collab with J. Cole or Missy Elliott. They’re two of my favorite artists, but I have a long list that includes all of my favorites that I must collaborate with one day in the future.
Your latest song is 'Silly'. Can you tell us more about the making of it and if there were any unusual things happening during the process?
“Silly” was created in my normal style of the creative process which includes me hearing a beat and coming up with a lyrical idea and expounding upon it. One interesting thing I could say is that originally “Silly” did not have a rap verse. I had written it, pre-recorded a rough draft in my home studio from top to bottom and on a late-night drive coming back from dinner I let my parents hear it. While listening, my mom said “ Mia, this needs a rap. You should write a rap.” Immediately my answer was no. I had already finished and felt like I couldn’t give this song anything more I couldn’t hear anything else. I was ready to move on and write another new song. She proceeded to push back saying “You’re a writer, of course, you can write a rap, it’s in you. Just think about it.”. Begrudgingly, I opened the notes app on my phone and wrote the rap in the back seat, by the time we got home the entire verse was finished and I went into my home studio and laid it down. It’s funny to imagine that many people’s favorite part of the song almost didn’t get written. Thank God for parents who know their kid's potential and won't let them be mediocre. Thanks Mom!
What's the behind-the-scenes of shooting a music video? How did the idea for it come about?
There is so much that goes into shooting a music video. “Silly” was shot at a studio here in Atlanta during an eight-hour shoot day and the idea was heavily dance-inspired. I’ve been a dancer since I was two years old and I wanted to showcase that side of my artistry as well. The object of this video was to just perform and have fun. “Silly” was so fun to shoot and the energy on set was immaculate. I wanted the video to feel familiar to my audience taking them back to a time when we used to sit and watch the Top 10 videos of the day. My Director Desmond Stearns along with my Executive Producer, Jordan Delamar, and Creative Director Demitri Nader took what I wanted to see and brought the vision to life on screen. I honestly couldn’t have asked for a better team.
What are you most proud of?
I’m amazed that I had a successful first year of releasing music. I’m so proud of myself and so thankful to God that I get to share my art with the world. It is by no means easy, but I’m so excited for what is to come.
What is the biggest challenge of being an artist?
Promotion, promotion, promotion! There is so much work that goes into the proper promo. It could literally make or break your release. As an independent artist, it is even more difficult when you don't have a big machine pushing you. You have to find unique ways to get your name out there and keep your art relevant. The key is to never stop promoting your work it is so important.
How do you structure your day?
Outside of my music career, I work in politics so the structure of my day is usually centered around what’s going on politically in my state. From there I map out when I will make time to write, create content, decompress, and have some self-care.
Do you have any hobbies or interests outside of music?
Outside of music, I’m an actress and I’m also a dancer and ballet teacher. I love all things arts and appreciate being able to hone in on all of my gifts.
Do you sing in the shower? What songs?
I don’t usually sing in the shower, but when I do it can be anything from a gospel song to Beyoncé or Paramore. I have an extensive never-ending playlist in my head haha.
What are your plans for the future?
I plan to release my first album in the Spring and have some big shows lined up. Hopefully, I’ll have a few acting roles in the works as well. Wherever The Lord takes me, I’m ready and prepared for the journey.
