John Puchiele Ensemble has been active as a composer for over four decades. His career began at the age of 14 with an original synthesizer-based performance/score for a semi-professional live theatre production. His repertoire grew to include film scores, album recordings, as well as live band, and ensemble performances. 'Change' is the new concept album and 5th release by John Puchiele Ensemble! It brings the listener along on a journey into a changing world. With sweeping ambient textures, rhythm, and ambient orchestral overtones, the album creates an auditory pathway into a world coping with climate change that affects all living things. Hello John Puchiele Ensemble. What strengths do you have that you believe make you a great musician?
I can’t see myself making that kind of statement about myself but I do have inspiration, desire and dedication to create. I am pretty good at combining those elements and making some intriguing music.
Who inspired you to make music?
The composers that most inspire me are; Igor Stravinsky, Steve Reich, Conlon Nancarrow, Satie and various ambient music composers.
Your latest release is 'Change'. Can you share with us the background of its creation and did any unusual things happen during its creation?
I had been thinking about the subject of climate change for quite sometime so I decided to create my version of this journey. This album is combination of musical score and sound design/improve. Each piece had been written in the order that it appears on the album.
Can you shortly describe each of the tracks that are on the album?
I would have to say that each track is my musical interpretation/allegory to the climate change issues and beyond so I can only define all the tracks that way.
How do you stay up-to-date with the latest musical trends?
It is hard to fathom how much music has been released…incredible music written in all genres. I listen to everything so trends escape me I guess.
What do you feel is the best song that you have ever released and why?
All of my ensemble music is instrumental based. I am quite proud of the compositions that are more ambient orchestral in nature however to answer your question I can’t really say which piece I have written is best…I’ll leave it to the listener.
Why do you want to record and release your own music?
I like process of composition, writing, producing, performing, etc and try to DIY as much as I can; I know exactly what I want with my music during the recording and writing process. It would be nice to have a relationship with an established record company but only under the circumstances I just mentioned.
Please discuss how you interact with and respond to fans.
I respond quickly to listeners in social media interested in my stuff. I appreciate the time they spend listening to my music.
What advice would you have for someone wanting to follow in your footsteps?
Well that is a difficult question to answer but one thing I did learn over the years is that you should never be afraid to discard music that doesn’t work for you. Follow your own path and try be honest and genuine in your writing. It is difficult enough getting your music heard…There is no right or wrong, good or bad…perception of music is all relative.
What are your plans for the future?
I’m working on a follow up alum to CHANGE that is scheduled to be released in spring or summer of 2023. I’ve also been working on a musical entitled The Otherside. I’ve been on a search for a good libretto writer!
