Interview: Aligners - Sixties Hearse

Having spent the pre-lockdown months crafting their sound via a series of live gigs, including a support slot alongside Valeras, Warrington-based outfit Aligners have now unveiled their blistering new single, ‘Sixties Hearse’. Channelling the same high-octane energy as The Amazons and Circa Waves, this thunderous new offering, with its pulsing pace and soaring rhythm, makes for the perfect introduction to the band’s sound. Expect to hear much more from these guys very soon.

So with their new release currently on loop for us right now, Chris Bound caught up with Aligners to find out more about the single and how they are coping during the current climate.

Chris) Hi guys, how are you today?

Aligners) We are doing all right – just trying to stay sane during lockdown. Strange times we live in at the moment.

How would you describe your sound?

We’ve been described as “no nonsense indie” and we fit into the indie-rock bracket.

Which artists have influenced you the most?

Artists like Arctic Monkeys and Catfish and the Bottlemen have been big influences for us, but we all were brought up on different music, ranging from Motown to early Noughties indie

How did your latest single, ‘Sixties Hearse’, come about?

I (Nathan; lead vocals and guitar) wrote it after a bad experience I’d had at Leeds Festival last year and some stuff I was going through at the time – nothing too serious, just your standard love-life issues. When I took it to the guys we adapted the original version I had and made into what it is today, which is definitely a bit moodier and heavier. The guys over at Sugar House then shortened it and cut a few parts out when we came to record it.

And are you planning to make it part of a larger release, such as an EP or album?

We’re going to release another single later in the year and then we’ll discuss what we’re going to do after that. I do think that we could create a good EP that has an overall story. ‘Sixties Hearse’ is just part of that story.

The lockdown has affected everyone’s plans, but what are you doing to stay productive and are you still able to work on new music?

A few of us are writing our own EPs to see if we can get any material out of them, and also because there’s nothing else to do! Usually if any of us have an idea we’ll stick it in the group chat and build on it.

What advice would you give to other artists trying to stay productive during this crisis?

Definitely go outside at least once a day – staying inside all the time can be very boring. Also use the time to do something you wouldn’t usually do. Anyone could pick up an instrument and get better at it in this time!
