Milwaukee-based musical duo The Pulltops released their latest album “Between the Lines” recently on the 7th of July, 2023. This album clocking in at just about twenty-two and a half minutes is chock full of old-school Power Pop melodies that will lift your spirits and take you on an unforgettable musical journey.
Opening on “Stronger” the song nails its burden of setting the tone of the album and preparing your ears for the journey you are about to be taken on. Aside from its in-album context, the song is also a wonderfully catchy tune with a hooky chorus. Continuing the album is the track “Changes”, which has a funkier lighter tone to it with its standout element being its bassline that is pure bliss to listen to. The third song “What U Want” breaks from the norm so far opening with a more modern sound with synth-driven tunes and an anthemic feel to it. This song makes you nostalgic for the music of the 80s and is a perfect time capsule. “Better Life” slows things down a notch lending itself to a more atmospheric and dreamy soundscape contrasting itself amazingly from the first half of this album. This song exudes pure building energy and is easily the standout track of the album, with a poignant message. “Seasons Change” is the third and final single of this album and is absolutely gorgeous with its instrumentation and stylings. Taking a sombre tone you can really feel the pivot in tone in the second half of the album with this song. Closing out the album is “Welcome to the Machine”. Opening with buzzer sounds and ambient tech dystopia motifs, the song has a distinct flavour to it and is by far and away my favourite on this album. If you are a fan of dreamy somewhat progressive rock you are going to love this one.
The Pulltops are maestros of their craft and this album is a testament to their talent. The guitars on every song are vibrant and massive with a production quality that is clean and polished on every song. Everything about this album screams finesse and every song flows together like smooth flowing water. It’s so well done that the shift in tone halfway through is not jarring but feels like the natural progression of the first three songs. Th Pulltops deserve every bit of love and support they get and you will be doing yourself a favour by checking “Between the Lines” out!
