Bringing a Sixties-infused cocktail to your ears, Disco Lizards are the epitome of modern rock’n’roll. Their single ‘What Are You Waiting For?’ comes complete with a singalong chorus, a mountain of ‘oohs’ to retain that festival feel, plus crashing lead lines and guitar parts. I caught up with the band’s frontman Matt to find out how the track was pieced together:

Lewis) Tell me about ‘What Are You Waiting For?’
Disco Lizards) It’s our fourth single this year and is part of a collection of releases that will lead to our debut album in 2020. We recorded it with producer Ian Flynn. The artwork is by Dutch artist Hugo de Jong (a good friend of mine). We are really pushing it on Spotify at the moment.
What inspired you to write it?
I wrote the song last year while teetering on the edge of a breakup, waiting for one of us to be brave enough to pull the plug and face the struggles involved. It was designed to have some attitude, which I think you can grasp from the vocal delivery and the cheeky riffs.
How do you go about writing your music?
I usually write songs at home in my living room and spend time working on the rhythms and vocal lines while developing any riffs I come up with. Once I think it is ready, I will record it on my phone and send it to Daniele [lead guitarist] and our producer for some feedback. Then the final stage is to try it in the studio and start piecing together all the other parts.
What do you consider to be your greatest career achievement so far?
Disco Lizards are a new band and have only been going for just under a year. We are still in the throws of promoting the band but, so far, our personal highlights would have to be our own shows we organised to launch our singles. We host a night called the Lizard Disco and invite other bands to join us for a party. The night is always fun! We also got to the finals of some festival competitions, which was cool!
If you could curate a festival, who would the three headliners be?
For me personally right now it would have to be Paul McCartney, Arctic Monkeys and Tame Impala. That would be an immense festival! Maybe we could call it Lizard Fest and we could play too.
