Current music terminology seems woefully inadequate when trying to describe H. Hawkline’s new material. Is it post-psychedelic revival art rock? Can we really describe him as an ‘indie’ artist when what he does is closer in feeling to classic Kinks? Instead of reaching after comparisons, it probably helps to place ‘Engineers’ beside his last cut ‘My Mine’. Both songs peddle a kind of woozy melody inflected style of music that melodically owes much to Cate Le Bon, who actually performs on the track. Her influence is felt throughout contemporary welsh music, with Telegram frontman/art-rocker Matt Saunders also acknowledging his debt to her. Resultantly, Hawkline’s latest effort is strong-grooved and fey, and leaves a lasting impression long after it’s faded.
