Anna Wise’s latest number ‘Balance In All’ is a beatific meditation on life, love, and death. ‘At any given minute we could die / but all the same it’s beautiful’ she sings atop a mellow electronic bass loaded with eastern styled layers. So far her singles have taken in gender politics and relationships with a hard-hitting acuity. This new philosophical turn seems risky in the current climate of pop, but with musicianship like Anna’s it’s a slick and immersive joyride. You suspect, by the end of this song, that Anna’s views on life and sexual relationships are informed by a kind of existential feeling of oneness, and the idea that life’s too short and miraculous to be marred by patriarchal bullshit.
