If Curtis Mayfield produced some young psychedelic upstarts like Tame Impala or Dungen, it would probably come out sounding like Australian producer Jonti's ‘Sleeping and Falling’. There’s a definite love for contemporary psych and trip hop in the production and in the vocals, but the various organic textures (in this case, strings, bass and keys) lend it a funky soulful air that’s more than vaguely reminiscent of Mayfield’s seminal album ‘Curtis’. Whether or not these comparisons are barking up the wrong tree is totally besides the point, this is interesting stuff.
'Sleeping and Falling' is the first single from Jonti's forthcoming album Tokorats, out 3 November on Stones Throw/Future Classic. Pre-order digitally & on vinyl: futr.cl/tokorats
