Princess Nokia has some clout in NYC and the more clued-up circles of America, ostensibly for her queer brand of second-generation outsider rap. In reality, labels don’t do her any justice (genre is usually just a marketing tool), she’s simply one of the most thrillingly modern practitioners around right now. In ‘Brujas', taken from her recent 1992 mixtape, Destiny Frasqueri drops some of her most potentially life-affirming bars yet: “I’m that blackorican bruja / Straight out from the Yoruba” she quips with fierce pride. It’s enough to make you momentarily forget about Brexit and Trumpmania.
