Listen/review: Sampha - Blood On Me

Words by Evan Crandell @ec_onthe1

We may have to be patient for the release of Sampha’s debut album Process, but the wait was made a little bit more tolerable with the single 'Blood On Me.' The Morden based R&B singer-songwriter worked with Rodaidh McDonald to produce a track that gradually builds in sophistication before the close. There’s a seamless blend of crackly electric drums and ethereal acoustic piano as Sampha croons with urgency about mysterious characters out to get him. His delivery sounds almost out of breath in the verses before he cries out in the chorus: “I swear they smell the blood on me / I hear them coming for me.” If 'Blood On Me' is any indication, the upcoming LP will be one to remember.

Sampha will release Process this year
