The Toronto-based five-piece band Madame Psychosis is out with their third LP album called “MP3” and it’s a collection of ten powerful and rich songs exploring the reflections of society. Fuelled with scorching guitar riffs, upbeat drum beats and headstrong vocals, the band delivers a gritty album which resonates with the listener with the music they play and the message they share. The central theme of the album is to be true to oneself. To be original and authentic in a society where it’s seldom seen. The song delves into personal and political topics, ranging from vulnerability and the human psyche to racism and oppression.
The album opens with the song “I’ll Go, " a soulful melody that sets the mood for the rest of the album. “Anywhere With You” begins as if it’s a continuation of “I’ll Go”, like a story half told. However, it picks up from there as the roaring guitar riffs accompany the magnificent vocals firing up the entire atmosphere. “Lucky” is the third track of the album and it keeps up the energy with its riffs and catchy lyrics. A classic indie rock track, this song is a favourite from the lot.
The band takes it way down with their ballad, “Hopeless” with its melancholic soundscape and bluesy progressions. The next song “Charlie’s Story” while following the mood set by “Hopeless” at the opening, the song quickly transforms to alternative and indie rock music. It goes on to explore the vulnerability we face and urges the listener to go forward by being fearlessly authentic. “Concrete Streets” is another song that charges ahead with an explosive sound. The grooviest bassline outlines the melody of the song as the drum beats echo a familiar rhythmic structure backing up the vocals. The seventh track of the album “Foxtail” is an optimistic rock ballad that uses vibrant guitar chords and dynamic drum beats to create an upbeat alt-rock soundscape.
When the album reaches the eighth song, the tone turns more aggressive and grittier and that’s exactly what we can hear in the song “Revolution”. Rogue guitar licks and heavy-hitting riffs with sombre vocals that erupt at the chorus. Being the penultimate song on the album, “Vulnerability” dials down the energy with soft and soulful guitar progressions and passionate vocal lines. The resounding bass compliments the guitar tone and creates a surreal soundscape. As the name of the song suggests, the melody strips you down of inhibition and fills you up with optimism and hope. As a result, the song resonates with our vulnerable side and leaves a mark after listening. The album’s closing track, “Nightmares” is the calm after the storm. Dense with synth pads, the song begins as if on an empty canvas. When the guitars kick in and the vocals take off, the feeling of calmness remains like a light amidst the chaos.
The album “MP3” is ready to blow your minds by exploring dark and introspective themes and blending them with their brand of music which is the alternative and indie rock vibe. A grand soundscape emerges and with passion and power, Madame Psychosis navigates their way through fiery guitar riffs, intricate compositions and soulful lyrics.
