Review: Abisso - Son Of Abyss

EryaV and D’avy are Abisso and they have just released their debut album exclusively on Bandcamp. There isn’t any info about the Italian duo's background and how they get together, etc etc. But what really matters is the music, so let’s just look into it because there is so much to say about it / to see in it.

“Son Of Abyss” is a strange yet seductive ten track album, dark, deep, intense and full of black and white slow motion images. If someone asked me what would be the perfect movie to have this album as its soundtrack I would say that it would be “Lost Wide Shut”. Never heard about it? Yeah, I’ve just made it up: it is a mix of David Lynch’s “Lost Highway” and Stanley Kubrick’s “Eyes Wide Shut”.

The obscure landscapes, the constant presence of the piano, the manipulated voices, cavernous and sounding as if they were in reverse, the sampling of rain, running water or the background sound of  vinyl: all these are just examples of the universe that is deep in “Son Of Abyss”. As if we were little creatures inside a womb in which there is a whole world inhabited by strange beings that move slowly, with a black hood, hiding among the shadows and the garbage. Pay attention, for example, to the violin in "Sin.k.hope" which increases the drama in a sublime way, and then we move on to the creepy piano of "Veined Death". This transition is one of the most remarkable moments of the album, but “Son Of Abyss” is worth its full experience!
