Somewhat unusually in the age of Covid, ‘First Light’, the new single from London’s DAAY, was born of positive thought. Refreshingly optimistic about what lies ahead here on Earth, songwriter Alex Barty-King has penned a harmonic slice of ambient indie that, he says, “promotes the power of rejuvenation and rebirth with specific reference to the beginning of a new day”. And lord knows we could all use the dawn of a better day right now.

These hopeful sentiments are conveyed on ‘First Light’ by way of some sophisticated dream-pop that’s dressed in reverby guitar chimes, lightly tumbling drums and Barty-King’s satisfyingly nimble vocal range. A gentle introduction of saxophone elevates the gradual build and, as the instrument takes the lead, completes a wistful, warming song that’s musically apposite for its uplifting message.
Based in Kilburn, DAAY’s five members include musicians of Lebanese and French origin. Another band whose likely rise has been stalled by the pandemic – the chance to further prove themselves in a live setting having been denied – they at least have three singles in the can. ‘First Light’ is the follow up to the novel psych-stutter of ‘Mama’ and further marks them as an inventive, accomplished act to track down when the gig circuit opens up once more.
