This week’s edition of LITM Singer-Songwriter Picks brings you joyful and reflective music from Spillway, Izzy Skinner, Lewis Mckale, Chris Hylton and SlowGhost.
Spillway - Honest Song
“Honest Song” is the latest single released by Spillway, a calming melody that fills the soundscape with bliss. This indie folk act brings a touch of vulnerability with their music. There’s a blend of soft textures layered with a soothing guitar progression, the notes fingerpicked to flow along with the lyrics. A sustained chord comes to provide the background for the beautiful lyrics and the sweet guitar tone. The song features the heavenly vocals of Spillway and Calica, who’s featured in the song. Layered on top of each other, the harmonised vocals fade into the soundscape as though its one with the melody. A graceful and honest piece of art that can make you feel something, “Honest Song” is a song for those days when we feel a little lost.
Izzy Skinner - Haunting
Izzy Skinner’s latest album “Haunting” features the reflective track “The Trees,” which showcases her blend of traditional jazz and contemporary experimental elements. Hailing from Ballarat, Australia, Izzy’s signature sound is atmospheric and ambient, with “The Trees” opening with a ukelele progression and soft synth pads. As guitar strums join, the pace builds, and Izzy’s haunting vocals add a layer of melancholy. The minimalistic instrumentation and gradual buildup create a textured, introspective mood. Lyrically, the song explores themes of reflection in nature, wrapped in abstract concepts and conveyed with emotional conviction. True to the album’s title, “The Trees” lingers with its reflective, melancholic beauty long after it ends.
Lewis Mckale - Point of No Return
Experimental singer songwriter Lewis Mckale is out with his latest album “Ghost at the Feast” and “Point of No Return” is the second song of the album. The song exudes an air of mystery as it starts. A blunt line on the strings lays the base for the ecstatic vocals of Lewis, spread across the eerie yet minimalistic soundscape. Slowly, the elements add up, a female vocal harmony, light percussion and a sombre violin line contributes to the atmospheric soundscape that’s created. A violin solo by the end of the song crafts a tune out of this world and hauntingly beautiful. This folk experimental song is one that’ll keep you on the edge, with thoughtful poetry and the dark soundscape.
Chris Hylton - Leave
Chris Hylton is back with another soulful song after his debut single “Pour Nous”. The latest single is a song that gradually unfolds, with melancholic melodies and a colourful chord progression. The song “Leave” is a bittersweet experience that is conveyed through a bright soundscape filled with acoustic strumming, textured vocals and a bold baseline. Chris’s voice exudes passion and pain as he captivates and hooks the listener to the melody. As the song goes on, the vocals soar higher and you can hear the emotions that are conveyed. The harmonica that burst in, following the vocals carry the melody for the rest of the way, painting a beautiful yet sorrowful hymn as it finally resolves to an end.
SlowGhost - Haunted
SlowGhost is the latest music project from Gary Robert Scott and Jerry Flanagan and they are out with their debut single “Haunted”. Produced by Patric Doyle, “Haunted” is a pop song with vivid synth lines and a simple yet groovy beat. The vocals are steady and soft, bouncing over the beats touching some beautiful notes. The soundscape is filled with curious synth lines, guitar chords and the steady running beat. At the bridge, the melody travels to some sinister voicings that has a hint of folk with a guitar solo harmonising with the graceful vocals. “Haunted” is a soulful ballad with gentle instrumentation that blends with the storytelling.
