Tell us about The Unsundered and how it came to be formed?
Talon and Forrest worked together and formed a band with another coworker John, who eventually moved to another state. This band breakup is actually detailed in the song Spores on our Seeking Humanity EP. Forrest and Talon didn't want to stop rocking, so they jammed as a duo for a while with Talon on drums and Forrest singing and playing guitar. This is where the band's name, The Unsundered came from, as Talon and Forrest didn't want to split apart and stop creating music. They decided to add a bassist and put out a Craigslist add which Matt responded to. Matt's tryout went well and the rest is history.
How has it been collaborating with your bandmates and creating music together?
It's been a really fun and rewarding process. The three of us all bring unique perspectives to creating music. Maybe more importantly, we respect each others feedback and constructive criticism in order to create music we are all happy with.
One can hear many influences at play in your latest EP “Seeking Humanity”. What are some of the songs and artists that have inspired your sound?
There's honestly too many to list, but first and foremost, the three of us grew up in the Seattle area in the 90's and were hugely influenced by the grunge movement. It's such a surreal experience to play at venues where legendary grunge bands played when they were coming up. We are also huge fans of David Bowie, Pennywise and Fugazi.
Tell us the story of how you got into creating music.
We have all been huge music fans since an early age. Matt used to steal his older brother's Alice in Chains and Soundgarden tape cassettes to secretly jam to when he was young and fell in love with the sound. Talon comes from a musical family, and his dad is kickass drummer who passed his talents on to his son. Forrest attended many local shows in the 90's as a teenager and was inspired to pick up a guitar.
In each of the songs in the EP, the lyrical depth can be felt from the get go. What does the EP, “Seeking Humanity” signify at its core?
Seeking humanity is a line in one of our tracks included in this EP. It is in Cirque des USA and that's why we have that as the first track. We picked these five songs to include as we feel they encapsulate different offerings into the human experience. To us, seeking humanity, or seeking out what it means to be human, is at it's core something sublime and unique to our experience here on Earth. The tracks on this EP explore middle and lower-class frustrations, love and sex, anger and seeking knowledge.
Through this EP, “Seeking Humanity”, is there a statement that The Unsundered is putting out there?
We're putting out there that's okay to be you, and be unique. That's what Seeking Humanity is all about.
The band has played live at iconic venues like The Charleston and The Airport Tavern in Tacoma recently. With many more upcoming shows on the schedule, tell us about your experience with your audience and what they can expect from upcoming shows?
We love the experience of playing live music for people. We always try to entertain and hopefully help people to forget about whatever may be troubling them and be in the moment. We're truly thankful for everyone that comes out to listen to us play. In return, we always promise to deliver a show filled with awesome energy and music people can groove to.
Out of the five songs in the EP, “Seeking Humanity”, which would be the band’s favourite track and why?
It's almost impossible to choose just one, but overall, we would probably have to go with Jerk Parking. We find it therapeutic to jam and vent about the morons we frequently encounter in parking lots.
What is the creative process for the band when writing songs?
Normally one of us will come up with a beat in their head. Then we write lyrics to it and text the music being played and the lyrics to the rest of the band. After that, we each create a few different parts on our instruments that we think may work well with the song. Finally, we start jamming to it in practice to flesh it out and finalize the song.
What can the listeners expect next from The Unsundered?
We're very excited to announce that our next show is at The Central Saloon in Seattle. It's truly a historic venue, and is known as the home of the Seattle Sound and the birthplace of grunge. In the next few months we also plan on recording and releasing another single or two.
