LITM chats with Fritz Kahn and the Miracles About Attila the Crow in this exclusive interview

Fritz Kahn and the Miracles have long been known for their ability to craft deeply introspective music, blending rich storytelling with evocative soundscapes. Their latest EP, Attila the Crow, is no exception, exploring themes of survival, freedom and finding joy in fleeting moments. The project draws inspiration from both personal experiences and broader human struggles, reflecting Fritz Kahn’s commitment to creating music that resonates on an emotional level. Balancing poetic lyricism with vibrant instrumentation, Attila the Crow is both a continuation of the artist’s unique sound and an exploration of new creative territories. In this interview, Fritz Kahn opens up about the inspirations behind the EP, the songwriting process, and what’s next for this evocative project.

Could you tell us about the inspiration behind Attila, the Crow? What ideas drove your creative process?
I realised I have a bit of a thief in me, constantly stealing moments of happiness wherever I find them—much like a crow that takes every shiny object in its path. That was the initial inspiration. The themes that usually drive my creative process are survival, resistance, and freedom.

How did you settle on the EP’s title, and does it carry a specific meaning or story? Is there a backstory to “Attila,” or the crow motif?
There isn’t a specific story, but rather a general feeling of collecting every precious moment you come across. There aren’t many of those moments, so you should hold onto them in your memory. I named the crow “Attila” after the infamous, ruthless barbarian warrior. He invaded Rome and took everything he could find.

What was your songwriting process like for this EP? Did you try anything new or different compared to your previous work?
I tried to convey simpler messages this time. I aimed for a point where everything felt almost magical. For instance, the single “Milky Way” refers to our galaxy as a lost little girl—something that needs to be cared for and protected.

Were there any particular musical influences or styles that shaped the sound of Attila, the Crow? How do these influences show up in the tracks?
To be honest, I carry so many influences with me that it would be impossible to list them all. My musical influences go all the way back to my childhood, to the hours spent in front of my grandmother’s TV, watching American films endlessly.

Could you walk us through your favourite track on the EP and what makes it special to you? Is there a certain lyric or moment that stands out?
My favourite track on the EP is “Milky Way.” It depicts our galaxy as both a shared home and a lost little girl in space—something that needs to be protected and cared for. That’s what makes it special to me.

How do you see Attila, the Crow fitting into the evolution of your own sound and identity? Do you view it as a continuation of past work, or a new direction?
It’s definitely a continuation. The initial concept—reality viewed through the eyes of an orphan child—remains. It’s very Dickensian in that sense. Both my past and future work will always speak to the inner child within us all—that’s where the magic comes from.

Is there a particular message or feeling you hope listeners take away from the EP? How important is audience interpretation vs. your own intent?
I hope listeners feel rescued, just as music rescues me every time.

What’s next for Fritz Kahn and the Miracles after the release of this EP?
We hope that more and more people discover this project. We’re also releasing a new EP in 2025, called Jeremy, the Outlaw, exploring themes of resistance and the quest for freedom.
