Review: La Palma - Sangue Latino

Chris Walker and Tim Gibbon are La Palma and they work between San Francisco and Washington DC. Their “correspondence-style” work method has already resulted in the release of two albums, four singles and now this brilliant cover song.

“Sangue Latino” is a song by Secos & Molhados, a brazilian three element band, featuring João Ricardo, Gerson Conrad and the astonishing Ney Matogrosso. It was originally released in 1973 and the lyrics talk about Latin identity as sangue latino means Latin blood. Chris Walker’s mom is from Brazil and he listened to this song a lot back in the days.

So, this cover is a homage in which you can see such a genuine and warm delivery to the music, full of heart. The vocals are in a lower tone than Matogrosso’s original singing and with the right amount of reverb, something that you can find (a lot) in La Palma’s previous work. In “Sangue Latino”, La Palma’s psychedelic aesthetic meets tropicalia meets dub. This gorgeous mashup also meets Chris Walker velvet vocals, a groovy-catchy-amazing bass line and all put together turns into a delicious song, perfect for a melancholic orange sunset!
