Fake Plastic’s single “Waiting/Working” is an indie-rock gem

Fake Plastic are a three-piece indie rock band from Hamburg, Germany. Their music is right from the heart—it is mysterious, thrilling, impassioned, and poetic—and holds the power to stir and soothe the spirit. Following the success of their debut album, Fake Plastic are all geared up for the release of their second album, “Awake In The Night. “Waiting/Working” is the fourth and final single from the upcoming album, and it brings a sound and message that hit hard and hit home.

Diving headfirst into life’s challenges—grappling with isolation, going through the motions, and longing for connection—the song takes you on an introspective and immersive journey. Lines like “I was a lost soul," “D’oh I walk a lonely road,” and “I’ll do what I’m assigned to,” tug at the heart. The acoustic guitar-forward sound creates a warm and emotive atmosphere, allowing feelings of understated despair, hope, and perseverance to palpably surround you. The vulnerability and sincerity in the lyrics are uncomplicated and blunt, reflecting a strongly embedded punk spirit. The universality of these struggles is clearly felt, despite its deeply personal narration. The music is steadily anchored to a mellow percussion rhythm, much like the unrelenting hum of latent inertia and melancholy arising from feeling lost or left behind in life.

Amidst these somber passages, there are moments infused with light. Feelings of hope, self-discovery, and connection are beautifully and tenderly evoked in lines like “Been looking for a little light,” “Wow you are my friend,” and “Oh love, I’ll understand.” Gritty, soaring electric guitar riffs and raw, expressive vocals tie it all together, adding grunge, garage rock, and post-punk textures. “Waiting/Working” is poignant and powerful. Fake Plastic continue to impress with every release: their effortless ability to balance grit and tenderness, light and darkness, and energy and emotion is rare to find.
