Irish quintet O Emperor don't fail to impress with their latest track, ‘Switchblade’. Taken from their new EP, ‘Lizard’, it’s a brilliant example of the psychedelic rock sound that’s been rather prevalent in the music scene lately. The first thing that stands out on ‘Switchblade’ is its simple, delightful bassline and playful synth-riff melody that kinda floats on top before the vocals kick in. These are distinct and welcoming, coating the music in what feels like a warm massage oil that pulls you through the whole track rather effortlessly and keeps you thoroughly entertained throughout.
There is a good mix to the dynamic flow of the track itself, the instruments complement each other rather well and nothing feels out of place or overplayed. If anything, I wanted more: ‘Switchblade’ ends rather quickly and on a fading cliff-hanger as the music slowly pans out. It’s as if the overall energy of the track never quite reaches a true end, and I would have loved just a bit more meat to it. But, overall, ‘Switchblade’ is a winner. O Emperor’s EP drops for us on 30 October, which I'm more than excited for as here are a band bursting with inspiration and who produce great psych-pop.
