In this edition of LITM Rock Picks, we curate a mix of artists like John Tibbits and more!
John Tibbits - “Trumped Up”
Hailing from South Birmingham, John blends folk and alternative influences to craft songs about working life, romance, and political cynicism, with his latest single ‘Trumped Up’ exploring a sound that has a very wayfarer vibe to it in the intro, hitting it high in the energy department. John’s voice is the star of the show here, with controlled, precise delivery that’s soundtracked very closely by the guitars and the drumming, creating the perfect bowl of a cadence for his vocals to lie in — and it pays off! The energy dynamics on this track are brilliant, and you’ll be bobbing your heads before you know it. With his high register singing and the guitar solos in the midst of the song, this one is a blast. Check it out here!
minus32heartbeat - “This City Shines So Bright”
minus32heartbeat is the solo project of multi-instrumentalist Matt Friedlander, blending guitar-driven alternative rock with modern electronic and ambient production, and this shines through brilliantly on his latest single, “This City Shines So Bright” — blending the ambient elements of genres like shoegaze into the electronic music production, he keeps the production varied and interesting with a rock drumming base that keeps great pace and energy throughout the track. There’s flair in the vocals, polish in the instrumentals, and soul in the music — all a man could ask for. Wrap this with a delightfully lo-fi mix that hits the emotive quite far home, and you have a solid listen through and through. Take a listen to the track here!
Oliver Jordan - “Philosopher”
It seems like Oliver Jordan's story is quite unique and somewhat mysterious, blending elements of creativity, mental health struggles, and a hint of intrigue surrounding his supposed death — but he continues to put out new music, and his latest single, “Philosopher” is a dark, heavy tune that strikes the right kinds of chords for a dystopian anthem - right from his growled vocals to the death metal influences in the sweep-picked guitars, the rhythm section goes strong on this track, with the leads interjecting for the counter-melodies. The energy here is dark, and mysterious— apt for somebody with Oliver’s profile, I’ll say. Take a listen to the track here!
Calliope Wren - “Fading”
Calliope Wren, a Long Island native, is a solo singer-songwriter and advocate for mental health and the LGBTQ community, dedicated to breaking barriers across genres including pop/rock, alt/pop, and rock — and on her latest single, “Fading”, she brings a high-energy pop rock track with her powerful, high singing that sets the stage for the rest of the energy dynamic. The electric guitars and drums follow closely in their punch and poise, and the elements all come together with a healthy amount of ear candy to make this more than a memorable listen. The hook sections, especially, get stuck in your head effortlessly. Take a listen to the track here!
Tom Minor - “The Bad Life”
Tom Minor (né Miner) is a singer-songwriter from London N1, influenced by a range of artists including The Last Shadow Puppets, Blur, Elvis Costello & The Attractions, and Nick Cave. He divides his time between London and Helsinki, and on his latest single, “The Bad Life”, he brings a very Deep Purple-esque sound to the fore with his mystery-inducing chord progressions, energetic vocal delivery, and with great chops in the drums. The breakdowns in the middle of the song make for excellent dynamics switch-ups, and keep the songwriting diverse, interesting, and very engaging, with a mix to top it off in much style.
