In this edition of LITM Rock Picks, we bring you the newest from Austin Blyth, Family Video and more!
Austin Blyth - “Vow Of Silence”
Rock artist Austin Blyth, fast building a repute with his smooth-flowing vocals over aggressive, fast-paced guitars presents a hard-edged, steely modern rock sound in his latest single, “Vow Of Silence”— and right from the opening notes, we’re reminded of what makes him a good artist in the first place. As the composer and lyricist on this track, he brings his melodic writing beautifully together with his lyrics, creating an emotive number that maintains power, drive and punch throughout, and makes great use of the rest of the ensemble, bringing together a rather compelling listen on this track. Family Video - “Problem With My Heart”
Family Video, the Charlotte-based seven-piece, crafts a polished yet boisterous blend of pop-punk, synthwave, and indie rock— and on their latest single, “Problem With My Heart”, they take the fusion and redefine polish in it, as the gritty saw-waves take over the low-end, while the guitars remain accessory to the vocals in the hooks and verses. The sound design stands out as experimental, bold, and distinctive— all qualities that make an artist instantly recognisable; while the mix more than chips in to tie everything together just swimmingly. There is much to look forward to from this bunch— check out the track here!
Hays Dowdy - “Inside The City”
Washington, DC-based alternative pop slash rock artist and multi-instrumentalist Hays Dowdy shows off a distinctive, strong focus on lead guitars— backed by an absolutely electric live energy, brings his debut single, “Inside The City” to your speakers. Maintaining a delightfully happy, upbeat vibe in the lyrics, he manages to keep the instrumentation varied and is not afraid to experiment with textures-- some gritty, some choir-like and heavenly sounding, and some others as percussive elements— delivering a powerful and highly listenable sound that is sure to feel good no matter where you play it. The Gas Widows - “She Starts Fires”
The Gas Widows, a punk rock outfit from the gritty streets of New York City, deliver a unique fusion of indie rock, alternative, and hard-edged punk— and in their newest single, “She Starts Fires”, they embody the hard, industrial corridors of post-punk and hard punk to deliver a gritty, aggressive sound that owns up to its character and charisma through and through. The vocals are the driving force of the track, with a subtle layering of harmony sprinkled in for good measure; making for a highly enjoyable listen for even the most discerning audiophile. 9 o’ clock Nasty - “Bad Monkey”
9 o’ clock Nasty, the Leicester, United Kingdom-based rock outfit, have long prided themselves on their driving beats and a side-eyed perspective, as they deliver relentless energy and a dose of mild sarcasm; and they're here again, punishing the world with their unique brand of love-infused rebellion on their latest single, “Bad Monkey”. Taking on an avatar of alternative rock, they bring the feel-good of the fuzzy guitars and the clockwork-like drumming together with the vocals, which shine with their unconventional processing that sounds distinctive, and positively amazing. The mix wraps up things well, with great balance and mids, and it all adds up to a delight. Take a listen to the track here!
