This week’s edition of LITM Singer-Songwriter Picks features pieces from Moira Chicilo and more!

Moira Chicilo - “Colour Of My Eyes”

Moira Chicilo, a Canadian singer-songwriter based in Vancouver, BC, crafts evocative indie folk music, drawing inspiration from the bustle of the city and from her own life, blending influences from Mazzy Star and others; and on her latest single, “Colour Of My Eyes”, she presents a gentle, winding listen with her guitars and effortless vocal delivery. The melodic writing and arrangement on this song truly shine with the depth and the layering in the melodies and harmonies, while Moira brings things full circle with her spotless vocals. The saturated electric guitars in the background lend a good bit of energy and texture to the music, keeping things versatile and well-suited no matter the atmosphere. Check out the track here!

Sam Slatcher - “Pioneers”

Sam Slatcher is a folk singer-songwriter and creative practitioner, known for his community-centered storytelling through music — and on his latest single, “Pioneers”, he presents an intimate piece with his whisper-like vocals in the intro, progressing into a heartfelt ballad that rests power in the acoustic guitars, holding the mix effortlessly together while the song progresses with a steady, energetic pulse that picks up gradually through the song in a rather poetic crescendo, while the lyrics are brought to life with the gorgeous vocal presentation. All in all, a winner of a track! Take a listen to the track here:

5 Hills Out - “Feelings”

5 Hills Out is a dynamic 5-piece Folk-Punk band from Derbyshire, blending the traditions of folk with the energy of punk — and on their latest single, “Feelings”, they deliver a powerful, catchy tune with a unique blend of instruments with the brasses and the punk rock drumming; from start to finish, this song keeps you hooked, while the vocals keep things engaging with their expressive delivery and melodies. The energy picks up beautifully in the choruses and in the guitar solo in the latter parts of the track, as it gently lets go towards the end of the track, bringing this track full circle rather well. This is a track you wouldn’t want to miss out on! Take a listen to the track here:

Brendan Forrest - “Rice’s Rag”

Chicago-born Brendan Forrest, now based in the Colorado Rockies, brings a unique sound to the fore with his blend of traditional bluegrass with his diverse influences from Chicago blues. On his latest single, “Rice’s Rag”, he brings a delightful bluegrass sound with his fiddles, nylon guitars and basses. Lacking any lyrics or vocal content, this track tells the story entirely with its instruments; and boy, does it do so well — the melodies come together effortlessly, motifs metamorphosing into melodies and deep, layered harmonies that translate beautifully with the progression of the track. The song divides itself up into sections that show off Brendan’s experimentalism quite well, and by the end, you’re left hankering for the repeat. Check out the track here!

Dotts O’Connor - “From The Ground Up”

Best known as the guitarist for Choice-nominated Irish band Come On Live Long, Dotts O'Connor's solo project blends classic songwriting with hazy production, and on his latest single, “From The Ground Up”, he blends his beautiful alto voice with the expressive acoustic guitars in the background, as he delivers a clean, soulful performance with heartwarming lyrical themes. The pulse of the track is kept by the shakers and the gentle tapping of the guitar body — and this makes for a beautifully minimalistic ensemble that keeps things beautiful and interesting. This is a song that shines for its ease of listening, and the melodic writing takes it a step above. Take a listen to the track here!
