Mourning Moon and Knight is a four-piece NYC-based musical outfit that recently released their debut EP “I Should Go” on the 8th of September, 2023. This band uses their skills and talents to craft warm and heartfelt genre-melding tracks that bring sunshine and good vibes to your playlists in a way very few outfits can. This three-track-long EP is a wonderfully cohesive eighteen-minute-long auditory journey that will leave you craving more from this band!
Opening on “Golden Boy”, this song instantly puts you in the correct mood to experience the rest of the EP with its warm tones and subtle nostalgic notes and motifs. This song carries a heavy burden being the first song and introduction to many to the works of this band and it delivers on all accounts. With a great blend of clean guitars and anthemic expressive vocals, you are instantly in sync with the emotive beats and waves this band will take you on. We are then hit with a genre swap on the next track “Bust My Ass” with a retro jazz-like swing on the beat. This departure from the soulful soft rock of “Golden Boy” is perfectly executed without coming off as dissonant or jarring but instead feeling like a natural melodic progression of what came before. The vocals are as brilliant as ever and will reel you in with their harmonies and fiery expressions. Closing this EP out is “Cosmic Orca” which is a brilliant alternative/punk rock-styled track that serves as the crescendo to this sonic experience. It is at this point in the EP you realise the diversity of sounds Mourning Moon and Knight have packed this EP with yet you never feel like you were forced here, but instead went on a smooth genre-jumping journey.
This EP is a commendable effort with a massive production, heavy and dizzyingly tall soundscapes and a vision that is unrelentingly ambitious and it pays off by delivering a listening experience that is transcendent and cathartic. So go check “I Should Go” out today!
