Cam Cole is a London-based singer-songwriter and one-man musical extraordinaire who recently put out his third album “Unleash” on the 25th of August,2023. Cole derives from his Folk, Grunge and Rock N Roll influences to bring you a heavy and potent auditory experience that lasts through all 10 tracks on this release. This forty-minute experience is made all the more impressive when you go into it knowing it's just one man with a guitar, his voice and a pair of foot drums with the occasional harmony.
Opening on “Truth Be Told ” this song hits you hard and heavy with a powerful opening that features massive dirty guitars chugging power chords. You instantly know what kind of ride you are in for once you are done listening to this track. Cole also opts for distorted vocals giving this song an incredibly grungy character. “Vibes” ups the tempo to bring you another high-octane listening experience and features expressive singing. This song is the perfect follow-up to the chaotic opening track. The third track “I Just Don't Seek To Please” really turns up the dial on the technical playing on display here with interesting and memorable riffs. This track really shows off Cole’s ability to keep a song dynamic while staying consistent in his delivery. The fourth track “Freedom” departs from the familiar one man band motif we are used to so far to add some fills and sampling to the soundscape, perfectly showcasing Cam’s ability to adapt his style to suit the vision of a track. Slowing things down with a pair of soulful tracks, Cam Cole marks the halfway point of his album with “Look Into The Moon” and “So Alive”. These songs really showcase the diversity of sounds Cam is capable of producing and give us a small reprieve from the barrage of powerful grunge rock that we enjoyed in the opening. “Know What I Mean” marks a return to grunge and heavy hard rock with one of the grooviest and hardest riffs I've heard. This song is a standout on this album and my personal favourite. The eighth track on this album is the titular track “Unleash” which feels like the high-energy climax to this album and book-ends the listening experience. “Slave to the Breaks” and “Home” act as the resolution to Unleash’s climax with the former of these two songs maintaining the rifftastic power of this album and “Home” bringing us warm clean tones that wrap this experience up.
Cam Cole really popped off with this one. Each song shows off his mastery and finesse of his instruments and he manages to squeeze out all sorts of unique and wonderful sounds out of his guitar. This album is definitely more than worth your time checking out and I loved listening to “Unleash”. So go give it a listen and show Cam Cole some love!
