Suburban Bicycle Gang are a three-piece musical outfit consisting of Dave Fox, Jerry Grey and Eric St-Pierre based out of Cambridge, Ontario. They made waves in the Canadian music scene with their first album release “Soft Balls Are Too Hard ” and they have done it again with their second album “In The Cosmos”. This 10-track masterpiece is a wild ride of sonic styles and dreamy hazy musical motifs that will take you on an exhilarating journey throughout its runtime.
From the opening seconds of the title track “In The Cosmos”, the album makes a very clear and bold statement about what kind of ride you are in for. “Lake Scugog” slows things down a little and gives you a chiller vibe cushioning your ears softly for the next track. “Bobo the Hobo” is an incredibly technical mastercraft featuring harmonicas and varying tempos in the opening. “Five Flings” and “Easy Money” bring some swing into the album with classic bluesy-style melodies and riffs. “Candle Light” was my favourite of this album as the incorporation of flutes into this track gives it an ethereal dimension and captures the tone of this album perfectly. The most lyrically evocative tack on the album is “Sammie Greene” and it brings a delectable old-rock feel. “No Dibs Day” features an incredibly hooky chorus that you’ll be singing along to in no time. “Love is a Fucking Joke” is the most emotive track on this album with the most passionate and heartfelt vocals. Closing out the album is “Glory Hole of Death” which is filled with jazzy chords and crisp vocals that tie the whole album together.
One of the most underrated and overlooked tasks when it comes to producing an album is the production. But that is of no concern on “In The Cosmos” as the production here is quite simply brilliant. Every song flows into the next incredibly smoothly making for an airtight listening experience. Every vocal harmony, guitar note, bassline and crash of the snare is crisp and the album is a true eargasm of an auditory experience. The use of different instruments, ambient sounds, synths and tasteful reverb give this album a gargantuan soundscape.
Suburban Bicycle Gang have made an album with a distinct sonic style. Their music is bold and unafraid to be something new, something breathtaking and something truly special. This is the type of album you listen to by putting on your headphones, cranking the music all the way up and simply letting go. The music will do the rest for you by completely taking over your senses and leaving you with melodies that you can't help but come back to. As a sophomore album, “In The Cosmos” doesn’t just meet the bar but gracefully pirouettes over it and gives you a once-in-a-lifetime listening experience so do yourself a favour go check it out!
