LITM Indie Rock Picks This Week Celebrate Rock Music with Doll Riot, Blake Havard and more!

From pure artistic melodies that make you think to garage punk anthems to rock out to, this week's LITM Indie Rock Picks have a little bit of everything and are a celebration of everything Indie Rock should be!

Doll Riot - Those Days

Doll Riot’s latest single “Those Days” is quintessential Garage Punk Rock. Everyone in this song sounds so good from the fast-paced dirty tones of the guitar to the melodic vocals and the groovy beat of the low end, the production on this song is incredibly tight. The lyrics touch upon themes of teenage angst and the themes they address mesh with the instrumentation perfectly and keep the song sounding tonally consistent. But the element that will stick with you for a long time post-listen is the song’s unbelievably catchy main riff. All put together “Those Days” is a stand-out track and we can’t wait to see what else this band puts out next!

Zero Carbon Band - Our Allotment

“Our Allotment” by Zero Carbon Band is a song that will take you to the countryside. If you enjoy Classic Rock from the 60s and 70s you will fall in love with Zero Carbon Bands style of music. Featuring incredibly warm springy guitar tones and a swinging groovy beat “Our Allotment” is like opening a time capsule of all the foundational elements of rock music. The vocals are crisp and soulful adding a jovial dimension to the song. Zero Carbon Band, as their name implies, are all about spreading their environmentalist message in a fun way through their music and the lyrics of this track romanticise the lifestyle of the country. Succeeding on all fronts “Our Allotment“ is a must-listen.

Joshua Ketchmark - Crossbone

Opening on Country styled acoustic chords, Joshua Ketchmark’s “Crossbone” is an emotional track. The lyrics of this piece will tug on your heartstrings and they are sung beautifully. Joshua does the vocals from the heart and makes you resonate with the heartbreak and regret that the songwriting is trying to convey. That's not to discount the arrangement of this track. As a totality, the instrumentation has a quiet and sombre touch to it. The choice to blend the sound of strings on wood with the acoustic guitar with soulful electric guitar leads and an exceptional piano backing makes “Crossbone” a soulful power ballad and a tour de force of Joshua Ketchmark’s talent.

Eruption Artistique - So Strange

A non-conformist masterpiece Eruption Artisitique’s “So Strange” is everything Indie Rock and Roll should be. Incredibly experimental in nature, I promise “So Strange” won’t sound like anything you’ve ever heard before. But what makes this song different is what makes this song undeniably special. Not arranged like a typical rock song, “So Strange” is very atmospheric but instead of transporting you to a different place Eruption Artisitque transports you to a feeling. Every note of this song leaves an impact and everyone listening to this song will interpret it differently. But that's what distinguishes Eruption Artistique from the mainstream, they don’t just make music, they make art that challenges you to think and they are less a band and more a theme given form.

Blake Havard - You Make It Right

“You Make It Right” is Blake Harvard’s latest single and is guaranteed to lift your spirits. Featuring a Hammond organ and keyboard backing that underpins uplifting chords played on the guitar, the song completely encapsulates the feeling of joy. The lyrics juxtapose unconditional love against a world that is growing increasingly hostile and serve as a type of meta-commentary for the song itself. With the rock music scene seeing an uptick of songs that deal with more serious and macabre themes “You Make It Right” stands as a lighthouse shining through. Blake Havard is immeasurably gifted as a musician and you will do yourself a favour by adding his music to your playlist, beginning with “You Make It Right”.
