Within moments of hearing the opening bars of ‘RIP GUS’ it becomes evident that an industry spotlight should really be shone on Luton right now. Featuring two local talents Mutss and Relly, the song is a tribute to their late comrade Gus who died in 2011. The trio were tight since school and Mutss and Relly’s tragic loss is felt throughout the song. Slick production keeps everything tight as Relly provides the hook. Mutss delivers verses that are instantly relatable not just to anyone who’s ever faced a loss like theirs, but anyone who’s ever felt any kind of serious and lasting emotional strain. He bears it all in the open, referencing his five-year hiatus from music following the tragic event (“I stopped music cus I lost all my love for the game / And life’s a journey rep your name every step of the way”). It’ll stay with you long after it’s over and it carries an everyday authenticity that’s incredibly rare and inspiring to see.
