Words by Tim Hakki @TimHakki
Led by bold and brilliant teenage lyricist Charlotte Brimner, Be Charlotte are further proof that our Scottish neighbours are better off without us. New single ‘One Drop’ is about as fully formed as you can get for an artist. Usually I’d rather disembowel myself with a fork than make any kind of reference to an artist’s age when I write about them, but Be Charlotte take so many free-spirited risks in this song that it makes you wonder why so many older groups are towing the line in the UK right now. It’s a highly combustible mixture of electro beats, noise and a simple vocal refrain that acts as both a riff and a chorus. The style is all over the shop but in a smartly cohesive way. It’s a deeply encouraging sound.
