Cape Town producer RVWR (pronounced RAWR) is a bass head whose latest track ‘Cupcake’ arrived in our inbox a few weeks ago. It’s the eponymous opener to his EP, which thematically draws on trap, garage and grime with the same brutal urban relish that inspired their progenitors. With urban music being rapidly commercialised, cloned, diluted and disseminated ad nauseam through beige radio-ready singles across the western world it’s refreshing to hear RVWR cut a little closer to the bone. Jean Genet once famously said ‘to achieve harmony in bad taste is the height of elegance’. Well, RVWR’s sound will hardly be poached by Bieber any time soon and it’s too unsanitary to be considered ‘trendy’ by the corporate taste-making machine, but there is a serious elegance and energy in his compositions that makes this 25 year old's music a truly exciting prospect.
