The breakthrough, and subsequent Mercury nomination, of The Comet Is Coming reminds us that there were actually some major positives (bye-bye Boris) coming out of the capital among all the tumult of 2016. ‘Final Eclipse’, the trio’s end-of-year release, channels pumped-up ragga beats with trancey surges of astral synth, while King Shabaka’s saxophone grapplings serve as both lead focus and rhythmic lubricant. There’s a cavernous drop, of course, prefixing a climactic return that emphasises the band’s affinity for fixing up analogue dance music with joyous abandon. Live dates find The Comet playing in the contrasting environs of Istanbul on Saturday and Ramsgate next week, before a wider terrestrial tour in the new year.
Final Eclipse is the first taste of a new Comet EP, due out in 2017 on The Leaf Label
