Effective artistic expression is often predicated on self-assuredness. It’s no coincidence that musicians, particularly in the realms of hip-hop and R&B, often release statement songs to exert their confidence for potential naysayers. The Oakland-born singer Kehlani recently put out such a track, with the help of one of London’s budding superstar rappers Little Simz. Kehlani and Little Simz both show sophisticated self-consciousness on “Table” as well as the conviction to share it with the world. At the crux of the track’s message is Kehlani’s hook where she sings, “I know what I bring to the table.” With production from Jahaan Sweet, DJ Dahi, and DJ Relly Rell, the music offers a relaxed canvas over which the two women assure us of their place in the world, and an impressive place it is.
